Hello
We cannot make HP LaserJet 1022n shared network printer to work from a TS profile.

Magleby Friskole. 2 servers: One Domain Controller and one Terminal Server (Both Windows 2003)
All TS users are logging on to Terminal Server, with at Domain logon.
We have 3 sorts of printers, network printers, all installed on DC, shared from DC
- Xerox Document Centre CS50 PS
- HP LaserJet M1120n MFP
- HP LaserJet 1022n

The first two printers print OK, but HP LaserJet 1022n does not from a Terminal Users Profile except for the administrators.
The printer is installed with correct driver, downloaded from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=bi-58552-1&lc=da&dlc=da&cc=dk&lang=da&os=1005&product=439323

The job is being spooled, but stops in status: Printing.
The administrator can print OK from the Domain Controler and from TS, logged on with RDP
A student logged on with RDP on TS only member of the Gruoup: Elever:
Not able to print.
This “student user” (name: printtest) is out of the Group Policy.
For me this indicates that the problem is not to do with the shared printer mapping I GPO with the script: printer.vbs.
See:
http://www.dmm-support.dk/index.php?page=add-a-shared-printer

The group “elever” are granted print access to the printer.
When the Print Spooler service is restarted: The job leaves the printer OK, and are printed out.

It could be interesting to take the test user “printtest” out of the Group Policy group: Elever … but then the user do not have access to logon with RDP.
How can that be?
In order to find out if the problem has anything to do with permissions etc coming from the group Elever.

The printers with the problem are installed on the DC, named:
Friskolen
Fagprinter

Can anybody help?

Regards
Asger

Answer from Experts-Exchange

The LaserJet 1022 is a 'hybrid' beast - it supports both 'host-based' and PCL5 printing mechanisms.

I don't know which driver you are using (I can't interpret the language used in the page you linked to).

But if it is a 'host-based' driver (which may be the only one provided), I suspect that this may be at the root of your problems - as far as I'm aware, 'host-based' mechanisms are not supported by Terminal Server, and I don't believe that HP support their use with print servers either (but OK if each client prints directly to TCP/IP port via client driver).

I have read some more and it seems like the driver comming with the printer does not support Terminal Server
however...
Have a look at this page towards to bottom of this link. It says the following :

"The Windows inbox LaserJet 6L printer driver has been tested and is supported under Windows Terminal Server and Citrix Metaframe"

Here is the link: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00405416

Tell us how you get on

Kind Regards
Morten

This has been resolved now

The problem is that HP Laserjet 1022n does not have a stable driver for windows 2003 Terminal Server

Therefore we have to use the driver for HP Laserjet 6L instead

In this senario with the 2 servers we did the following:

1. Installed the HP 1022n as normal on the Domain Controller
2. When installed, we right click on the printer -->Properties and go to the tap --> Advanced
3. Click on "new driver" and install HP Laserjet 6L (it comes with windows 2003)
4. When done logon to the terminal server. we have to make sure that the driver is available here as well
5. Open Printer propperties. On the white background , Right click --> Server Properties.
6. Go to the tab "drivers". Click "add" and install HP Laserjet 6L
7. Make sure printer is added to the logon script and it will work fine

Kind Regards
Morten
